Once all recording and overdubs are complete, the mixing phase may take place. In the mixing phase all the recorded tracks are merged together onto two tracks (left and right channels). At Recording Lair we mix down to two-track 1/2" analog tape (24 bit digital also available if desired).
Considerable time should be spent in the mix-down phase. A complete day can easily be spent on one three-minute song. 20 or more songs can be mixed in a single day. However, for a truly professional sound a lot of fine tuning, and thus time, will be needed.
Each instrument must be carefully placed in the stereo field. By using panning, compression, equalization, gates, de-essers, effects and other signal processors each channel can be fine tuned and shaped so it fits perfectly into the mix.
At Recording Lair we have complete auto-mix capabilities. Auto mix allows an engineer to program every fader move, every EQ change, every effect change, and every dynamic change into our consoles. As a result we can achieve the perfect level and processing on every instrument at every moment in the song. After a part has been programmed, the console will play all the changes itself - flawlessly every time at the exact right moment.
